Another one in line of Asian themed games, Dragon Shrine is a Quickspin release with 3-4-4-4-3 reel structure and 40 paylines. The Chinese concept here has a pretty general adaptation. The main symbols are The Dragon and The Shrine, and they are categorized as higher value symbols.
Medium value symbols are the colourful gems followed by the low valued A, K, Q, J and number 10. Although that there is nothing that would single out this slot from many others on the market, the visual aspect is decent and well accompanied by the background music.
What We Love
The slot offers an abundance of free spins that can be retriggered. We particularly enjoyed the Dragon Stock Respin feature. Once triggered, this bonus round freezes Dragon and Wilds on the reels during the extra spins. Even the Wild and Dragon icons that appear on the screen during the follow-up spins are locked on the reels, further increasing the winning chances.
An interesting addition is the mirror-effect that occurs when a full stack of Dragons lands on reels 1 or 5. Upon landing, the opposite reel acts as a mirror and free spins are played until they are all used up.
We were also happy with the bet range and the RTP percentage. The minimum total bet is $0.20, which is pretty great for 40 fixed paylines slot. Return to player is also on the higher side – 96.55%, according to Quickspin.
What We Do Not Like
The concept is too general for our taste. The Chinese tradition is extremely rich and diverse and it is always interesting to see how different companies will approach it. We usually enjoy slots like this, but in this case we could not brush off the feelings of disappointment. With Quickspin’s execution of the game, it almost feels like we were robbed of something.
The only indication that Oriental theme is exploited is the background music and two main symbols. Considering the possibilities and theme potential, much more was expected in terms of visual appearance and even sound effects. The style of the slot is pretty consistent to other Quickspin releases, but maybe it is time for them to consider a makeover. Although we find their releases decent when it comes to appearance, we are ready to see more.
With the theoretical RTP percentage of over 96 and the minimum stake of $0.20, the slot is undoubtedly worth your time. If you are a player that puts the profit potential first, the game with the possible payout of 800x your stake should definitely find its place on your “to do” list.
If on the other hand you are equally interested in the aesthetics, be prepared to mediocrity. The company has reportedly tried to give a modern twist to the traditional theme, however, that was not our impression. The end product turned out to be a simple and under-developed slot – not bad but not particularly impressive either.
